On June 12, 2025, a devastating incident occurred when Air India Flight AI171, a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner bound for London Gatwick, crashed shortly after takeoff from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport in Ahmedabad. The aircraft, carrying 242 individuals—including 169 Indian nationals, 53 British nationals, seven Portuguese nationals, and one Canadian—plunged into the Meghani Nagar residential area, resulting in significant casualties both on board and on the ground.

At approximately 1:38 PM IST, Flight AI171 took off from Ahmedabad, initiating its journey to London. Shortly after departure, the flight crew issued a MAYDAY call to air traffic control, signaling a critical emergency. However, communications were lost, and the aircraft crashed into a multi-story building in the Meghani Nagar locality. The impact led to a massive fireball, with the wreckage embedding into the structure, causing further destruction and loss of life. According to reports, out of 242 peoples , 241 were dead on the crash including former Gujrat CM Vijay Rupani who lost their live in this crash. Only one survivor identified as British national Ramesh Vishwaskumar, was found and is currently receiving medical treatment at a local hospital.Authorities are in the process of collecting DNA samples from the victims to facilitate identification and provide closure to the bereaved families.

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has initiated a thorough investigation into the cause of the crash. Preliminary reports indicate that the aircraft was fully fueled at the time of takeoff, which may have contributed to the intensity of the fire. The Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, a modern and widely used aircraft, had not previously been involved in any fatal accidents, making this incident particularly alarming. Aviation experts are analyzing flight data and cockpit voice recordings to determine the sequence of events leading to the crash.
